10 Unique Restaurants in San Francisco

Instead of creating an itinerary that many have already mastered, I have compiled a list of restaurants that I feel are an absolute must-try while in San Francisco. These were the places I continuously took people when they came to visit (and that I didn’t mind eating multiple times).

Greens (Marina)

Vegetarian cuisine, Greens produces ever-changing menus that are dedicated to the seasonal harvests of local farmersI love that they take the most obscure vegetables and make them into delicious dishes. I highly recommend making a reservation at sunset because the floor-to-ceiling windows make for an incredible view!

Hog Island Oyster Co. (Ferry building)

This company serves the best shellfish dishes I’ve ever had. From creamy clam chowder to a seafood stew, I never get sick of this place. I wrote an extensive blog dedicated to this company here with a detailed description of their practices but overall, if you’re a seafood lover this place is a MUST.

Saint Franks/Juniper (Nob Hill/Russian Hill)

If high-quality coffee + innovative homemade syrups are right up your alley then Saint Franks is the place. The lemon curd blueberry muffin is tempting but if you’re craving savory pastries I recommend their sister restaurant down Polk St., Juniper.

Mensho Tokyo (Tenderloin)

If you think you don’t like ramen, Mensho will change your mind. Unsurprisingly, this hole-in-the-wall ramen spot has a Michelin star and they deserve it. The broth is incredibly rich and savory; my favorite way to enjoy it is with an extra side of crispy carrots and smoked peanuts on top.

Spicy Lamb Miso + Duck Breast

Empress by Boon (Chinatown)

This is THE hidden gem of Chinatown. Take the elevator to the top floor of an old banquet hall and step into the esthetic of a Bond villains’ hideout. This modern Cantonese restaurant founded by Michelin-starred chef Ho Chee Boon, features classics like Peking Duck alongside inventive and elevated dishes. You can either make a reservation for a prix fixe menu or snag a seat in their tea lounge or bar.

Camino Alto (Cow Hollow/Pacific Heights)

Whenever I’m craving clean & delicious eating this is my go-to. All produce comes directly from local farmers and their meats/ seafood are top quality. It’s one of the few places you can find local grass-fed beef as they have high standards for their meats.

Molinaris (North Beach)

This little deli will make you feel like you’ve been transported to a countryside town in Italy. Opened in 1896, they are committed to keeping the Italian-American culture alive. Their hot sandwiches are the way to go, made with high-quality ingredients making for the best gourmet sandwiches in San Francisco. The service is a plus as well, they take the time to make every customer feel at home.

Tartine Bakery (Mission)

I searched high and low for the best sourdough bread and for me, Tartine takes the cake every single time. Aside from the most delicious sourdough bread your mouth has touched, their pastries and sandwiches are heavenly. The banana cream pie tart still remains my favorite pastry.

Arcana (Mission)

Without having to drive all the way to Napa, you can experience unique natural wines in a gorgeous greenhouse. I love popping in for their happy hour before my dinner plans. They serve delicious small bites and they also accommodate larger parties with a reservation system!

No trip to San Fransisco is complete without a sampling of the cuisine. Fresh local ingredients and a diverse population make the Bay Area a foodie paradise. I hope this guide helps you find some unique tastes that will top your list as they have mine.
