Health Insurance For Travel Nurses

This has been one of my top 3 questions on the subject of travel nursing. In my own experience, I prefer to get private health insurance outside of my travel company and here’s why:

  1. I like to take time off in between contracts. If you take off more than 30 days in between contracts your insurance typically is ineffective. I personally don’t like to deal with the stress of this timeline especially if I’m having a hard time finding a job!

  2. I switch travel companies often. I like to pick my travel contracts based on location. That being said, certain companies staff different hospitals so I’ve had to switch companies in order to work where I want to live! Instead of stressing about switching insurance, this is why I prefer private insurance. I also don’t want to feel pressure to stick with one company just because of my insurance!

  3. Click here for an article provided by another travel blog for great insurance options.

If you don’t have pre-existing conditions and don’t ever meet your annual deductible I recommend United Health One insurance. It has been difficult for me to have a lot covered under my insurance but I don’t typically need to use my insurance for much. Here’s the breakdown of what I pay:

Primary: $92.09

Dental: $23.50

Eye:  $17.59

TOTAL: $133.18

That being said, if you sometimes need specialty work I wouldn’t recommend this insurance and would go with a company that gives you more coverage!
