How To Make Money When You Can’t Find a Travel Nurse Contract

The timing of when my jobs stop & start doesn’t always work in my favor so I always try to be prepared. If you need some extra money before your contract starts, here are great ways to make income using your RN license.

  1. Medely- This is a per diem company that will have job postings based on a specific zipcode you are based out of and it’s typically in larger cities. Searching their positions may open opportunities in other areas apart from your current specialty. As an ICU nurse I was eligible to pick up shifts in PACU settings. Outpatient PACU positions are a great way to find short term work during your job search and are covered under your scope of practice. However if you are an ICU nurse be wary of job postings for Intra-op because these will still show in your job options even though you may not be comfortable or qualified for them. Although I have not personally fulfilled any of these positions I have seen postings for ICU, LTACH, Labor and Delivery, and Pediatrics.

  2. Nursefinders- Another per diem company based through American Mobile Network (AMN), one of the nation's largest travel nursing companies. They offer short term work through their large network of vendors and your credentials are seamlessly applied. In my experience they offer the largest selection of per diem bedside positions.

  3. Care Rev- This service stands apart from other per diem companies in that they have an easy to use app that provides access to jobs similarly to those found on Medely.

  4. Clipboard- Although I have not personally used this platform, this resource also provides postings for facilities with immediate staffing needs as soon as tomorrow or a month from now.

Not landing your dream contract right away can be stressful but using these resources I have provided can bridge the gap between contracts. Generally speaking with most of these companies, there are opportunities to directly receive shift requests if you communicate with management and you are a good fit with them.
